Whew, my thoughts and feelings surrounding this book are so long that I had to pull out the laptop for this one. I know it’s been a minute but this book took me so long to get to and a year later, it’s STILL trending. Since I finally took the time to read it I thought I should also take the time to review it. So let’s get into it!
I loved and hated this book all the way to the end. But this is also the first book that I’ve EVER cried over. I wish I could say I was lying. But sue me, I’m a sucker for found families and bro. Harry? HARRY? If you know, you know. That shit took me out. Anyways, now let’s go into the pros and cons of this glorious book. Pros:
Now, let’s get into the cons. Cons:
Now, don’t get me wrong. Evelyn did some FUCKED up shit. But my problem was not necessarily in the characterization of Evelyn or her actions but rather the writing surrounding the crux of their conflict. Which was Evelyn’s actions amplifying Celia’s insecurities and jealousy surrounding men. And then Celia dragging it even past that which to me, highlighted more of Celia’s moral standings than Evelyn’s actions. (Despite Evelyn also being very problematic). It was all very messy and complicated but honestly, this is a story about their romance and since I hated Celia from start to finish I think that kind of defeated the purpose of that for me. Is it weird that I still gave it 5 stars? Lmao. Now, don’t get me wrong, I can understand that navigating sexual identities during that time period make the story not only realistic but highlight the complicatedness of it all, I just personal wish creative license could have been suspended for some of their arguments. It was literally their only conflict and it was throughout the entire book. It was annoying.
So, my feelings towards this book are as messy and complicated as the book itself. And yet I think it was incredibly written. But honestly, the most profound message I got from it was the bond of friendship and family. I loved the journey of the story and maybe that’s not what I was supposed to take from it, but there were many aspects of the book that just didn’t do it for me. I guess that’s why reading is so amazing––because we can all read the same book and yet understand it completely differently. Anyways, I just wanted this to be a quick update and a short review on the book that’s literally breaking social media feeds. Haha. And I wanted to show off my new hair. Go green! Or whatever. 😏 Until Next Time! With love, Arianna
