May is mental health awareness month and I’ve been waiting to talk about all the ways mental health should be treated with just as much care as we do our bodies. I’ve talked about my mental health frequently on the blog and my Instagram before; from therapy, to self reflection, and tracking my personal growth, it’s a journey I’ve loved being able to navigate through social media. But in the same way I’ve expressed how taking social media breaks is probably the best way to keep your mental health in check–especially now with increased social media use and for what it’s used for. So at the moment my Instagram is a little ghost but with summer just around the corner I want to remind you guys to grant yourselves grace. We’ve been working, going to school, and surviving through a pandemic. Mental health has been at an all time fluctuating scale and some days might be even harder now than they ever were before. And that’s okay. The important thing to know is that you matter, above all else. Rest your mind, your heart and your soul and everything else will fall into place.
Now without further ado, let’s talk about these damn songs! Now I love Pentatonix. I’ve been following them since they first came out with their Christmas album in 2015 and I immediately fell in love. Now it’s been awhile since I’ve kept up with any of their albums but I heard two songs and just knew these were perfect to lead this conversation. If you don’t know about Pentatonix, they’re an pop acapella group of five and they’re phenomenal. They started out doing covers and medleys and two of the members even have their own group called Superfruit that I totally recommend checking out. Anyways, their second original album “The Lucky Ones” released in February and since I’m late to everything, here we are. Now I can rant and rave. I’m only going to talk about a few songs from the album but the tracks I am going to analyze relate particularly to the ways I’ve chosen to interpret them. But of course, music is supposed to relate to those in the ways it relates...to you. So maybe I’m completely off with the way I’ve chosen to listen to their lyrics but then again, maybe I’m not and these songs can help you clear your head when you need someone to speak to you about your mental health. Coffee in Bed. How could I start this list without looking at this song first? During rough mental health days, sometimes all we need is for someone to check in on us. Maybe a simple text letting someone know that you’re thinking of them, maybe asking someone how they’re doing–how you're really doing?– or maybe you just need to call and sit in silence to keep each other company. It’s the little things that count and this song really highlights that. From the perspective of a romantic relationship, I’m sure, this song says, “I know I'm gonna hold on to; When you get too in your head; I'll bring you coffee in bed.” Bye. How can I not be in love? It’s blatant mention of anxiety in the first line was something that really resonated with me and it made me think that all relationships–romantic or not–really should focus on trying to make sure your partner feels okay, even if it’s through the smallest thing. It shows that you care. Love Me When I Don’t. Of course, nothing like a little self doubt and insecurity. We all have them, we manage, but sometimes it can get a little out of control. It’s good to maintain negative thoughts for yourself, but it’s also nice to know that you have someone in your corner to pull you back when you start being a little too hard on yourself. Whether it’s your mom, your best friend, your pet, or your therapist, moral support is always important. The pandemic has made us feel so isolated and it can be hard to feel like you have anyone in your corner, especially when you can’t always see or be near them. However, this song really talks about what it’s like to have someone remind you not only are they there for you, but that you’re stronger than you think. And we’re all always stronger than we think. Granting ourselves grace always makes this process a little easier but a good support system is nice to have when your mind can be a little hard to leave. Support groups or group activities online or in-person can also help with this too. It doesn’t always have to be someone you know but social interaction is vital for mental health stability. Just know when it’s your time to reach out and when you need to self reflect. They are Lucky Ones. As the culmination of the album, and the song that holds the most meaning for the band themself, I thought this was the perfect song to use to talk about growth. I talked earlier about growth not being linear and when we’re learning how to live and live with our realities, it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, we always have to give ourselves the chance to look back and see how far we’ve come and give ourselves praise for all the hard work we’ve put into getting us this far. As for the baby steps that feel like it’s not getting us anywhere, it's not until we finally turn back and see that we went further than we thought just because we kept going. I loved how this song talked about that. The beginning of the song starts out portraying thoughts of running away, avoiding problems, and the survival skills we used to make you feel like you need to tuck and hide into yourself. But the you come out the other end and realize “oh.” It’s all easier at the end of the tunnel, we just have to get there first. Honorable mentions: Of course I can never stop at my optimal number. (I swear, if ya’ll ever have the honor to hear me talk in person…) *Be My Eyes– “I can get caught up on little things and missteps; You would build a ground beneath my feet; When I get lost, I'm out of my mind, too in my head; You're the camera to focus me.” It’s giving "Coffee in Bed" vibes. *Never Gonna Cry Again– I just love the way this song talks about the pressure to change yourself into someone you think you’re supposed to be because society or the internet or your family tells you “this” is who you're supposed to be. And this steady conflict of “who’s right?” is one I imagine we all can relate to at various points in our lives. *A Little Space–And we love a song that establishes boundaries, even between romantic partners. When things are moving too fast and you feel overwhelmed, communicating that you need a little space before things turn ugly? I can appreciate that. Even if in the end, it leads to heartache, at least I knew I established who I am from the beginning. I think the beauty about hearing an album that’s done by a group that has such a creative writing process as this one, is that we get to hear so many different voices and perspectives within the album. No two songs sound the same or even talk about the same thing. In an interview Kevin Olusola talks about how this album is a culmination of the five years the group spent together and I’m excited to finally hear how that’s evolved and grown into this–something beautiful, modern, and heartfelt–despite the years and changes they’ve been through. If you guys want to hear any more of my album analysis’, make sure to follow me on StudyBreaks website to read more. I have an article on Julia Michaels’ album “Not in Chronological Order” coming out soon so stay tuned! And remember, “your illness doesn't define you, your strength and courage does.” You're doing a great job where you are. Keep going. I'm proud of you. ❤️ Always with love, Arianna

1/27/2019 0 Comments Spider-man: into the sPider versefirst. Can we talk about how cool these graphics are? I don’t own them of course (I own literally 5% of the photos on my blog fyi) but my goodness, just looking at this picture brings back strong emotions. Anyways... I feel like I always walk out of a Marvel movie speechless. (Except after Fantastic Four where I was in a mixture of confusion and disbelief. We don’t talk about it. Ever. It shall and will never be mentioned again.) Aside from that, Spider-Man into the Spider Verse is by far the BEST Spider-Man movie EVER CREATED hands down. And I’m talking just...everything. The story line was phenomenal-and gosh I really wish I gave spoilers but I can’t do that to you guys so PROMISE me you’ll watch it-the GRAPHICS...Oh my gosh I was nearly blinded just from the intro but they were so amazing! And I loved how real it felt. Like, you really experienced his teenage youth for a majority of the movie. He was embarrassed of his dad, super smart but wanting to fit in and make friends, and extremely unsure of himself. And a lot of us are! Imagine having to terms with having super powers, Spider-man powers?! I can barely come to terms with being normal and taking mid terms and AP exams. So that’s crazy and for a 17 year old (I’m only guessing. I don’t really know his age) that’s huge! And scary and so there was a lot of doubt and fear and uncertainty but he had the support of all those other Spider-Men (and women, shout out to my girls!) so I really loved that as well. In this one he wasn’t alone, he had help and the transition into his powers came a lot from within and motivation from the people closest to him which I felt was really cool. It wasn’t an immediate “oh I got bit by a spider, I’m sangry about my uncle (sad and angry), I’m Spider-Man, COOL!” so I liked the growing period and slow transition while watching the rest of the story unfold. Along with that, we got to see Peter Parker develop as a character (with a twist) so that was interesting all on its own. It was like they were both evolving together so I loved that. I loved EVERYTHING if you couldn’t tell. Haha. On that note, I also loved that it felt like I could relate on so many levels as a teen. And then, the big thing I loved was having an Black and Latino on the big screen playing A MARVEL SUPERHERO. Now, don’t get me wrong. Black Panther was everything-Wakanda forever- (they really should make that an emoji) but African American AND Latino from Brooklyn! That’s huge. And I kept thinking about is how THIS is going to be the first Spider-Man I show my kids. Taking a quote from the movie itself, I want to show them that everyone can wear the mask, especially minorities who are rarely ever shown on the big screen. So many things are changing in our world and this is such a huge step that I’m so glad Marvel took. It made me feel proud because I finally saw myself up there, you know? That was me in that movie. That was some of my friends. That was my family and my neighbors. Along with that, the family dynamics were not only amazing but so on point and the comedy was phenomenal. I literally couldn’t breathe at one point, it was just so good. Lastly. So I say all of this to say, that 1. Marvel did good. Thank you for making Miles Morales for all the little boys and girls who never got to their faces on the big screen wearing a superhero suit until 2018. 2. Go see the movie. 3. Again, best Spider-Man movie I’ve ever seen. 4. Go see the damn movie. 5. I even shed a tear so that’s telling you it’s GOOD good. 6. GO SEE THE DAMN MOVIE!
And when you do please comment below and let me know. No spoilers! But I’d love to hear what you think. And Marvel, if you’re reading this, thank you. And Stan Lee, up there in heaven, you really made my world. Until Next Time! With love, Arianna Quote: "Today is the tomorrow you talked about yesterday." -Unknown 4/8/2018 0 Comments New PlaylistHey! How have ya’ll been? I’ve been doing pretty good. Pretty busy. I was in the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (comment down below if you watched the show) and I was in the Tarrytown parade which was cold but fun. Three birthday's came and went, I went to Rochester to visit the University of Rochester and I fell in love and now I’m finishing up my Easter Break. So now that I have some extra time on my hands and a 6 hour bus ride I created a new playlist and thought I’d share it with you, especially since I had so much fun making the last one. I hope you guys enjoy.
The entire Spotify playlist will be linked below. 1. Maniac- Michael Sembello Because you already know I had to have an oldie on here. Last time I ended with one, today I thought let's start out with one. It's from Flashdance if you don't already know. Not one of my favorite movies if I'm being honest but this was definitely my favorite scene. Albeit the longest scene too but great motivation for working out if you're into that (I'm not. Haha.) Enjoy! 2. Clearly- Grace VanderWaal I am currently writing this as I listen to the song and I just love it so much. My favorite lines are the chorus and when you listen I think you'll know why. I really do like Grace. She's young with a powerful voice and she just gives me chills every single time she sings. From the sound of things, she too has taken a different turn in terms of style of music and once again, I'm not mad at it. I think 2018 is the year that artists are really making changes in their music styles and I'm loving it. Can't wait for the new album, Grace. (Btw, I wrote some of these songs before others so if my wording feels like I'm referring to something else, you probably haven't gotten to it yet. It's fine.) 3. Ask For It- Future Animals I was in H&M when heard this song and let me tell you, right after the first line I was pushing and shoving my way through the rows, my hands full of jewelry, my bag bumped into a shelf but I had to stand there under that speaker and figure out the name to that song. I don't know what I would do without Shazam, let me tell you. I later looked them up on YouTube and I think this is their first song and I looove this song. Its so good! It's raw and powerful and possibly inappropriate but who the hell cares. I'm looking forward to hearing something else from them soon. 4. Who Will Save Us Now- David Chappell This playlist is kind of all over the place with no clear theme but it's cool. I kind of just threw a whole bunch of my favorite songs on here, both old and new but we're having fun. Sticking to the theme of no theme I just had to add this piece. I don't really remember how I stumbled upon it but I was going through my instrumental lists and I haven't been able to stop listening to this song. I don't even know how to explain it. It's not epic music but it's not a whole bunch of violins and piano either so I guess you'll just have to listen to it for yourself and figure it out. When you do, comment down below. 5. In My Blood- Shawn Mendez It actually took me a few listens to really get into this song which was a surprise for me since I love Shawn Mendez but don't worry, I still love this song. I'm getting cool James Bay vibes from him (and for those of you who don't who that is, first of all, shame on you, second, I shall leave a link to one of my favorite songs by him down below for your listening pleasure). I heard he's taking a few new different directions with his new album and I, along with many of his fans, I'm sure, are looking forward to hearing them. 6. New Rules x Are You That Somebody- Pentatonix Mixing up the old with the new, Pentatonix just has away of making you fall in love over and over again. Their new guy sounds amazing! I don't know his name yet (I haven't looked it up) but if you don't follow up with them, they recently they got a new bass singer after their old one left to be closer to his family. And he's really good! I've been trying to find a way to add this song to one of my playlists for awhile now so I'm glad I can add it now. Trust me, this is a song you NEED to listen to. 7. RGF Island- Fetty Wap This is my favorite song by Fetty. I don’t really know the words but I’ve listened to it at least a hundred times since it’s come out. I don’t know, I just really like the music. Does that ever happen to you? You’ve listened to a song so many times and still don’t know the words? LOL. Or maybe that’s just me. Anyways, it’s explicit so there’s you’re only warning. 8. Never Coming Down- Willamette Stone I'm still pretty sure Willamette Stone is only a fictional band from If I Stay but I don't know why they just look and sound like a real band. Are they? I'm not sure. I haven't researched them that much but this is my favorite song from them. This is by far the best party and dance song, and LOL it literally just came on. Talk about a coincidence. It has been summoned. Haha. 9. Leave a Light On- Tom Walker Every time this song comes on I always think the beginning is so deceiving! At first it doesn't sound like something I'd listen to but then it gets to the middle and it gets soo good so bare with me when it comes to this song. The good part comes up next. But I really do like this song, although I only recently listened to a few of the words and I don't think its a happy song. Haha. I need to start listening to the lyrics more. 10. Medusa- Kailee Morgue I heard this song in H&M where I also heard Ask For It and I just think it sounds so majestical. I was worried because as I took time to pull out my phone to Shazam it I knew the song was coming to an end and I watched as the thing started to turn slowly as it loaded but I got the song just in time and laughed to myself as a lady watched me from the clothes rack behind. She probably thought I was crazy but she clearly doesn't know the struggle. Anyways, I've listened to one other song by Kailee and I think I'll be listening to more of her music. 11. Sky Walker- Miguel and Travis Scott Okay, if you guys don't already know, I never listen to the radio. The only time I hear the radio is when it's late and I'm sleeping in the car. My mom plays it while she's driving and when I wake up that's the only time I listen to the radio. I don't really like radio music, if that makes any sense but I heard this song and I recognized it and then I played it again and I just haven't stopped falling in love with this song. I think I might start tuning into the radio more often now. LOL. 12. Borders- Kabaka Pyramid and Stoneboy I also heard this song on the radio with my mom. It was reggae hour (LOL) and this was probably the first song that came on and aside from the music I was just really drawn to the message. When my mom saw that I had added this to the playlist she was so happy. Check this song out, it's really good. 13. Sea Castle- Purity Ring I don't know how to explain this other than freaking awesome. I picture you dancing in a club to this song surrounded by smoke and colorful lights. It's electronic, I guess is what you would call it but not really. She-whoever she is-has one of those angelic voices and it's just really good. You can already feel the build from the beginning of the song and its just-ugh!-I love it. 14. Him & I- G-Easy and Halsey I like G-Easy and Gasoline is my favorite song by Halsey even though she's not really my style of music. She has an amazing voice though. But I really love this song. Not to mention they're a really cute couple in real life (not that I've met either of them. LOL.) This came on my Spotify radio and I thought I had added this and forgot about it so it was like this song was already a part of the family and I quickly added it right after. 15. Forever- Haim I always say that Haim is way underrated. I love these three sisters so much and this song is just one of my many favorites. I actually sat there going through my top seven trying to figure out which one I should throw on the playlist but I ended up on this one. Now after you listen to it, you can't tell me they don't have Fleetwood Mac vibes. They're so cool! I love this song. Just picture yourself wearing a leather jacket and bellbottoms with a red guitar. It's awesome. This playlist is kind of all over the place by I’m loving it. If you guys have any songs you think I’d like, comment down below. I love finding new music and comment down below if you like these playlists I’m putting out. I’m really enjoying making them so maybe this will be a new thing. I took a lot of time going over this playlist though, playing it as I wrote, trying to figure out if certain songs fit and I think I did pretty good. I added Halsey and Borders at the last minute so I'm glad they sort of fit with whatever I was going for with this playlist. I don't even know what I was going for but this was fun. Thanks again for reading. Until Next Time! I had this amazing English teacher and she taught me about life and society all the while tying it into what we were reading at the time. And let’s be honest, not all of the books were modern. Actually, none of them were, but I had my first political awakening in that class. It was black history month, as it is now, and we had to write about what we thought this song meant to us and what it was talking about (link down below).
I can’t remember the conversion specifically but we watched videos on the injustices in this world and while I’m not ignorant to the things going on around me, I was still young and in a way, sheltered. I hadn’t experienced anything personally, nor had my family-Thank God-but here I was in this class watching videos on young girls and boys being discriminated, harassed and it was eye-opening for me. So much that I started to cry. I didn’t know why, I had no words, but I remember I just sobbed and I didn’t know how to stop it. Now this post isn’t meant to be depressing or go into how bad the world can be but it’s supposed to let you know that this month is for awareness as much it is for celebration. We have to celebrate and remember all of African American culture and accomplishments because as much as we have accomplished, we still have a long way to go and I’m happy to be a part of a generation where I can help make that change. I like Macklemore. I feel like he’s not afraid to talk about what’s important in this world, especially in our society today, and he takes a stance on the things he believes in. He’s not disrespectful and I truly appreciate him as an artist. I don’t listen to all of his music but I’ve definitely listened to Can’t Hold Us more than once and I love this song. I heard it in that English class. This was what ultimately broke me down. I won’t explain too much about it, I’ll just post it down below and hope you take the time to listen to it. And not just listen to it, but understand and connect, relate and then start a conversation. Yes, February is almost over but that doesn’t mean African Americans should not be appreciated, celebrated, and respected after this time. Talk with your friends, your family, definitely comment down below, but have those ‘uncomfortable’ conversations with the people closet to you; no matter your race. We are all human and we all deserve to be embraced equally. Help create a world where we can have more than one month to remember us-help create a world where every day we are treated the same. Happy Black History Month everyone. Until next time! With love, Arianna White Privilege II- https://youtu.be/Y_rl4ZGdy34 White Privilege- https://youtu.be/gdVRlM-kSx8 2/25/2018 0 Comments My 2018 PlaylistHello my beautiful internet friends! I’m sorry I’ve had a pretty busy two weeks but I’m back and I thought I’d start this wonderful February off with some good music. It’s only my top 10-not listed in order of favoritism and only 10 because this list would be forever long if I didn’t give myself a limit-but I’ll have all the links posted down below as well as a link to my Spotify so you can follow me and listen to this playlist. I hope you enjoy and check them out.
Heaven- Julia Michaels If you’d don’t know, now you know, I love Julia Michaels. She’s an amazing person -very humble and down to earth-and that voice! Omg. She’s written some amazing stuff but she sings even better. I’m not really a Fifty Shades fan but anything with Julia Michaels I click on it so this is on my list. Slow- Noah Cyrus I love this song but I have the live version posted down below just because I like it a whole lot more. I heard the live version first but on my playlist is the original so tell me which one do you like better in the comments down below. I really do like Norah Cyrus. I’m not sure what other people have to say about her but she’s all over my playlist this year so...keep it up girl! Don’t Say- The Chainsmokers ft. Emily Warren I heard this on Jeanine Amapola’s vlog (a youtuber, I’ll have her link posted down below) and I searched up the key words only to be led to this. I love The Chainsmokers and I love Emily Warren so what else is there to say? Sleep Talking- Charlotte Lawrence Another hidden gem. I was just going on from one song to another with this girl. I've never heard of her before but she's popped up a few times on my YouTube feed and I finally caved and clicked...anI i fell in love. It's just a cool song and it has a pretty good message too which I appreciate so check it out. Stand by me- Skyla Grey An old classic truly modernized. I love Ben E. King (may he rest in peace) and the original will forever be number one but I really love Skylar Grey's version. Not to mention she partnered with Budweiser to help the people in America by donating to non-profit organizations to help disaster relief efforts. The video is also truly amazing so I'll post the link down below. Hurt Somebody- Noah Kahan and Julie Michaels I think I found this right after I found Sleep Talking. I'm telling you, I was on a roll that night and that was even before I knew I was going to make this list. Anyways, I mainly clicked on this song for Julie Michael but I'm glad that I did because I love it. (I seem to say that for all of the songs. LOL) I looked more into Noah as well and I like his song Passengers as well so if you check it out, tell me what you think in the comments down below. He's definitely an artist to get into for this year. Feel it Still- Portugal. The Man I had been hearing this song on commercials forever until I finally watched one of Morgan Yates car videos (another youtuber, link posted down below.) and she played it! I was so happy. I always forgot to look it up and now that I have it, I play it so much that even my mom likes it. Funnily enough, now I don't hear the commercial as much anymore. You Be Love- Avicii ft. Billy Raffoul I have no idea who Billy Raffoul is (I found a lot of new artists this week) but I love Avicii but even though his name was my clickbait, it's Billy's voice that adds this song to the list. And that beginning guitar is just soo good. Highly recommend. Tell me if I'm wrong (but you can't because I'm not wrong). Praying- Kesha I've always been a big fan of Kesha's but I'm even more in love with her because of this song. I won't get into the politics or it all but I look up to her for making this song after everything that she's been through. It just goes to show how strong and powerful she can be so all I have to say is, I'm looking forward to her new music. You're amazing Kesha! Just What I Needed- The Cars Definitely a throwback but I recently watched Step Sisters on Netflix, (It was pretty good. I would recommend.) and they played this song. I hadn't heard it in awhile but after I looked it up, I haven't been able to stop playin it so I had to add it to the list. And that's it for my Top 10 Playlist! I hope you guys all enjoyed. I have all of the links I mentioned down below as well as the link to my Spotify playlist (that I literally just made) so you can listen to all of these songs with me. Comment down below your favorites or maybe give me some recommendations for new music because I'm always looking for new music to listen to. I'm looking forward to the new music of 2018 so that I can hopefully make more of these fun playlists for you guys. Don't forget to share, comment and subscribe; Until Next Time! With love, Arianna My Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/muffen.mt/playlist/4xFKvYKYpy8i7a52DaenWn Slow (live): https://youtu.be/-rcKuKdarV0 Stand By Me- Ben E. King: https://youtu.be/hwZNL7QVJjE Morgan Yates: https://youtu.be/t0jmLniAF3E Jeanine Amapola: https://youtu.be/-ekwll5JzXU For those of you who don't know, I love Michael Jackson. He's my husband, my idol and will forever be The King of Pop. So when my mom said they were going to do a live tribute in New Jersey we jumped at the chance. Of course we waited a week to check the show reviews and the venue but after everything checked out we bought two tickets off Groupon to see MJ Live in Engelwood, New Jersey. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be an epic night turned out to be thoroughly disappointing.
For one, I thought they were just going to play MJ's music, maybe project a few images and videos onto a big screen. Although I guess you would need a license for that, but I would have preferred that rather than have someone trying to impersonate him; because even though the man could dance, the singing wasn't all that great. First. Where was the diversity? I think this was one of the biggest problems of the show. As a man literally of many colors I at least expected, if not the crowd, but the performers to have more than one African American on the stage. But that's exactly all I saw. One African American with dreads and another brown girl. The actual 'Michael Jackson' is from Brazil and the band had the black keyboard player in the back. Everyone else was white and I'm upset and appalled. Believe it or not people, Michael Jackson was black even when he was white; and I'm not saying everyone can't sing and dance to his music but we need to be included, especially in something like this. It was disappointing and dare I say, I was a little offended. It's 2018 people, get it together. Next. I hated how the people in the crowd were actually screaming out as if it were the actual Michael Jackson on stage. Now it's one thing to enjoy the performance but cheer for the performer because last time I checked, the actual Michael Jackson is dead-may he rest in peace-because trust me, if it were actually him on stage I'd have either have run away screaming or tried to climb the stage. (I'd probably try to do both on my way out. lol). Not to mention, the music kind of sucked. Sometimes the songs were played too fast or cut right in the middle and maybe that's the way concerts go but as a live band I had hoped for a lot more. The dancers were a little off beat, a dancer knocked down the mic stand! I just felt like the entire set up was a little unprofessional especially when the songs would start when 'MJ' was still backstage going through a costume change and he was singing from behind the curtain. It was a major turn off. And maybe I'm being a little harsh but if you're looking for style and pizazz I definitely wouldn't recommend it. But then again, maybe I'm wrong and the show they do in Vegas is better. All I know is, MJ Live was a bust, at least for me. I'm just glad I got those coupons for discounted tickets on Groupon. |
